“All of you remove your robes,” ordered Ntashia.

“It’s against our creed to remove our holy vestments in the public eye,” said Eenga.

“You’re within your own sanctum,” Ntashia reminded her. “And besides that, I’ll shoot you down if you don’t comply.”

“We have nothing to hide,” said Orja.

“I doubt that,” replied Ntashia, “—seeing that you and all the other technopriests seem to be heretics of the highest order.”

Where Orja’s robe had slipped, Ntashia noted a tattoo of a hammer and lens but they lacked the additional vackri tentacles that she spotted on Eenga Neezas’ shoulder.

“Not heretics!” exclaimed Eenga. “We are true believers in eternal life. Your religion of the One True God and His Son offers only the distant hope of a resurrection. The vackri offers eternal life immediately—not after groveling through a life of good works and charity and dying a miserable death from old age and decrepitude.”

“Interesting view point,” said Sar Savaht as he drew nearer, his shotgun pointed toward the knot of captured technopriests.

“It should be of interest to the Dire Clan who are present,” said Eenga as she divested herself of her robe revealing a few underthings, a tattoo of the vackri, and a small pistol strapped to her thigh. “Their philtre of immortality is prepared and ready for them. However, if word of our religious practices leak out we will keep those philtres locked in our vaults and they won’t get a drop of them. Immortality will be denied them.”

Ntashia handed her crossbow to Garvey who left it trained on Eenga as his wife removed the hidden pistol from Eenga’s slender leg. In addition, she picked up the waxed leather pouch and unwound the string that kept it closed. Inside she found the carefully packed adrenal gland of the vackri.

“I think,” said Ntashia, “that you have less leverage than you might believe. That is, if you keep the philtres of immortality in the laboratory at the lowest level of your sanctum.”
